What this journey is

II

Ten days through places of power: temples, springs, volcanoes and the ocean, with enough quiet in between.

We move through the island by taking part rather than ticking off sights: a bathing ritual in the springs, a sound ceremony, sunrise on the water. After the full days of central Bali come the slow ones on Gili, where there are no cars, only bicycles and footpaths.

In practice

  • Morning or evening yoga

  • Cleansing rituals at the sacred springs
  • A sound ceremony at Pyramids of Chi

Ubud and northern Bali

01

Bali, Ubud

Days 1–4

The cultural and spiritual heart of the island, surrounded by rice terraces and jungle. This is where the temples, the springs and the places of power are, and where Bali's traditions are easiest to feel.

  • Sebatu Holy Waters temple taking part in the bathing and cleansing ritual at the springs
  • Ulu Petanu and Tibumana waterfalls genuinely sacred places that tourism has not spoiled yet
  • A sound ceremony at Pyramids of Chi a sound healing centre built on the principles of sacred geometry
  • Sunrise on the water and a dolphin trip in Lovina a soak in the hot springs, northern Bali
  • A walk through Ubud and the Goa Gajah temple
Snorkelling over a coral reef off Gili

Gili Trawangan

02

The Gili islands

Days 5–8

Three small islands off the coast of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. There are no cars here, only bicycles and footpaths. Clear water, coral reefs and a real sense of seclusion make Gili the right place to rest after the full days of central Bali.

  • Fast boat from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan
  • Snorkelling with turtles and coral gardens
  • A day of rest on the beach
A cleansing ritual at the temple, participants in green sarongs

03

East Bali

Days 8–10

We come back to the coast, to the Candidasa area in the east. This part of the island is known for calm lagoons, coral reefs and a steadier pace. The east is considered one of the most sacred parts of Bali, where earth, water and light meet.

  • Tirta Gangga Water Palace a royal water palace, a symbol of cleansing and vitality
  • Ujung Water Palace a historic water complex with gardens and views over the ocean
  • Besakih Temple Bali's main temple, at the foot of Mount Agung
